I’ve always been drawn to the uptown soul of 1960s Chicago, and both of these sides take their inspiration straight from that Toddlin’ Town. On ‘Coz I’m Ready,’ Lenny’s passionate vocals glide over swirling strings, with tiny hints of Bacharach in the arrangement—a heartfelt tribute to those mid-tempo beat ballads that get spun in the wee hours, songs that hold a special place in our hearts.
 
‘I’m the Marryin’ Kind’ by Tommy & The Elts stays rooted in the Windy City. I was aiming for a Dells-style vocal arrangement, but I couldn’t help wondering what would happen if I paired that with some Latin-style horns. The result? A proper old-school, uptempo stomper that surely would’ve given the springs of the Casino’s maple dancefloor a good old workout!
